Navestock Church, Essex
St. Thomas the Apostle in Navestock, Essex, is an example of a churchwhich should not have survived the Second World War. One night in 1940a Luftwaffe parachute 'landmine' [a sea mine deliberately dropped onland as a high capacity blast bomb] floated down out of the night skyand exploded in the churchyard just a few feet from the church.
The powerful blast ripped right through the building destroying allbut four tiny fragments of the church's stained glass and seriouslydamaging the spire and roof. The then vicar, Rev George Bishop, managed to arrange for tarpaulins and other temporary roofing duringthe war years but major repairs were not completed until 1954.
The shallow blast crater left by the landmine remains in thechurchyard next to the path and is, today, marked by a sundial.
Navestock is an imposing church of 11th and 12th century date butwhich was largely rebuilt in the 13th and 14th centuries including theaddition of the prominent timber belfry tower. The tower has beenradio-carbon dated to 1120AD to 1240AD. This tower is constructed offour inclined posts stabilised with long passing braces which arejointed with 'archaic lap joints'. The present bells date back to theearly 15th century.
The church's massive organ was a gift from a private house but wasmoved to its present postion in 1954 when an upper gallery wasdemolished as part of the post-war renovation.
Internally the church has a nave and chancel with a south aisle - theaisle being built about the same time as the belfry tower and on thesame alignment. The aisle is divided from the nave by a series of'stone' arches which are not stone at all. As revealed nearer to thechancel, the arches are actually wooden structures which wereplastered over to resemble stone. A detail photograph elsewhere inthis set shows the method that was used to achieve this.
Internally there are numerous monuments dating back to the 1600s, manyfor the Waldegrave family who were prominent local landowners.
