    • Elsie Barnes worked in Domestic service at Margaretta House Clenchwarton. The house was part of a working farm owned either by the Browne or Lane family at the time (to be verified).

Elsie would have worked long hours which did not give her much time for socialising let alone spend time with her young man courting. I have been told that Herbert Sainty the young man in question would sneak into the grounds to see his sweetheart and they would do most of their courting in the greenhouse. The Gardener who often suspected these goings on would take a twig and level the ground outside the greenhouse door so that he could check for footsteps at the start of the next day. But Herbert was one step ahead of him and would always brush the earth level when the left.
