    Golden Wedding
    • GOLDEN WEDDING AT GIRU
Relatives and many friends attended the dinner at the Giru Bowling Clubhouse on the occasion of the Golden Wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs T Enever.
The young couple were married in St Phillip's Church, Cornwall Street, South Brisbane and resided in Brisbane for several years until in 1929 Mr Enever accepted the position of Chief Electrician at the Invicta Mill, Giru. In April of that year the family moved to Giru, where they have since resided ever since. After serving the Haughton Sugar Company for many years, Mr Enever decided to branch out into his own business and after acquiring suitable premises has now established a highly successful Electrical and Hardware Store.
The evening's entertainment was in the capable hands of Tom Junior, who had arranged a delightful musical programme and several amusing diversions. Several talented grandchildren danced, recited, sang and played and gave pleasure to all those present. Miss Shona Brain and Tom Enever provided some very pleasant vocal numbers and Mr and Mrs Taviani delighted all with their duet. The Taviani lads provided several numbers on the accordion and also helped to provide music for dancing. The Poletto family was very much to the fore with Mr Jack Poletto on the accordion and son, Frank on the electric guitar and Juanita on the accordion.
During the evening several speakers drew on some very pleasant memories of life as it was in Giru several decades ago. Messrs Bert Griggs, Jim Lewis, Ron Lyons and Kev Lyons in congratulating Mr and Mrs Enever on their golden anniversary, recalled many events which happened when the couple first came to Giru and pointed out that over many years of association the family is now part and parcel of the Haughton. Amongst the guests were Mrs E McCloskey and her sister Mrs G Smith, who would be amongst the earliest pioneers of this area and Mrs Smith was prevailed upon to take the microphone and say a few words. Incidentally Mrs Smith has just recently celebrated her 88th birthday, and well deserves the title of grand old lady of the Haughton.
As the evening progressed supper was served when the beautiful anniversary cake was cut with traditional ceremony by the celebrants. The cake was made by Mrs Martha Mayes and suitably iced and decorated by Mrs Enid Wardrop.
The happy couple were presented with many beautiful gifts and well wishes came from many friends, including the congratulatory telegrams from the Sisters of St Patrick's College, Townsville and the Sisters from the Giru Convent.
Mr and Mrs Enever are very happy to be in the midst of their family; son, Tom, is happily settled in Giru, whilst daughters, Betty, Mrs D Moon and Lavinia (Mrs Frank Poletto) are also settled in the area.
